From Behind the Desk: An Intern’s Perspective

As yet another summer season is in full swing, plenty of young teens are still scrambling for opportunities for employment, usually after constant harassment by parents to get off of the couch. With the recent economic downturn not too far in the past and unemployment rates still at relative highs, most of today’s youth have been left in the dust by the perspective job market. While sitting here at my desk, I smile to myself knowing that I am one of the lucky ones. However, for me, my path to a summer position was atypical of the time-old tradition of inquiring for employment at a local ice cream shop or community pool.  My position at the Michener is that of an intern, the first full time job I’ve had and a real-life experience that will certainly have a positive impact on my future career.
