How Does Art Speak to You?

I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way… things I had no words for.” – Georgia O’Keeffe

For the 1,600 school students that participated in the Art Speaks program, discussing and creating artwork was a way to draw connections to their own personal experiences, to the artwork exhibited at their school, and to the larger art world. By the multitude of written responses and artworks submitted, the art “spoke” to these students in many different ways.

Whatever your reason is, take some time to reflect on what you have seen today in this exhibit. Perhaps you made a connection in your observations of the artwork, whether it was from one of the contemporary artworks, or a student work. Possibly one of the works engaged you in a personal way, whether igniting a certain feeling or a personal memory. Or, perhaps creating art is something that is part of your own life and the process of creating resonates within you.

I’m 5 years old – “Art is a part of nature”

Human beings should think like an artist.

My name is Olivia – I am 5 years old

I wonder what is the purple circle in the main gallery (it makes my face scrunch up thinking about it)”. And, “the bridge looks like it has a turtle under it”. “Why are there buttons in the forest?” “Those buttons looked fun but so small!”

Thank you for sharing it with me!”

Art has a way of making you breathe a little easier, and forget how to breathe in the next moment.

Art can be a reflection of ourselves or a challenge to see ourselves a different way. The best art is both.

The b&w photo by Allyson Sheehan shows an amazing eye for detail, composition and subject matter. I hope she pursues this talent further and shares her vision with others in the future.

Art speaks to me with a soft succumbing whisper. A form of art may invoke a strong emotion, usually either amazement or great sadness. I flock to art that is “in your face,” or surprisingly beautiful. Art is a way of life, a way to look at things with a better clarity or a different perspective. Art shines a light on things that are usually looked past with indifference. To me art is any form of self-expression.

Coming here is a respite from the everyday life of this Mom… a mini sabbatical so to speak. That is, until the bus comes. It is, for me, similar to what Emmet Gowin said; a call for a peaceful and quiet mind. The opposite of a call for action……

Art doesn’t speak, it sits on a wall and my mind tells me what I think.
