Today was day three of the installation of Astrid Bowlby’s work, SNAG, found in the Putman-Smith Gallery.

Astrid has approached her installation using “low tech” materials, as she has described, using materials such as cloth, and sculptural objects made out of wood, plaster and found materials. She states that this is a similar process to how she makes a drawing. “The objects and paper shapes function as marks that I can arrange in space just as I arrange marks on a sheet of paper”, she states. As part of the Art Speaks project, Philadelphia-area artist Astrid Bowlby, was commissioned to create a special installation in our Putman-Smith Galleries. The purpose of this installation is to encourage dialogue about contemporary art and its many forms.

With her installation, SNAG, Ms. Bowlby will be creating a “conversation” with some of the Michener’s best-known landscape paintings. With this work, she will be turning the gallery into a contemporary meditation on the sense of place and attachment to the land that lies at the core of the Pennsylvania Impressionist tradition.

She will be working on her installation through out the week during public hours, so visitors are encourage to observe and ask questions. By Friday, her work will be fully installed.

How Does Art Speak to You?

I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way… things I had no words for.” – Georgia O’Keeffe

For the 1,600 school students that participated in the Art Speaks program, discussing and creating artwork was a way to draw connections to their own personal experiences, to the artwork exhibited at their school, and to the larger art world. By the multitude of written responses and artworks submitted, the art “spoke” to these students in many different ways.

Whatever your reason is, take some time to reflect on what you have seen today in this exhibit. Perhaps you made a connection in your observations of the artwork, whether it was from one of the contemporary artworks, or a student work. Possibly one of the works engaged you in a personal way, whether igniting a certain feeling or a personal memory. Or, perhaps creating art is something that is part of your own life and the process of creating resonates within you.

A couple weeks ago, the museum was in the process of installing the Phillip Lloyd Powell Door, an elaborately carved and painted pine door and surround, created by the designer-craftsman Phillip Lloyd Powell. This installation was revealed on September 25th and it has made a wonderful addition to our Putman-Smith Galleries!

This door had undertaken some intense conservation over the last several months by furniture conservator, Behrooz Salimnejad, in order to prepare for this special installation. Salimnejad undertook a microscopic analysis of the door’s paint layers and determined that the original finish consisted of six shades of bright red, reddish-orange, and yellow-orange oil-based paint. He also restored areas of wood loss and removed the top layers of latex paint to restore the original colors.

Be sure to visit this work next time you visit the Michener!
